ZERO FIVE (instrumental)

LOVERS AND LIARS

at the corner of the bar at the bar on the corner
something's up and someone's down
staring in a glass like looking in a mirror
hoping hope will come around
and the sun's long gone but the moon isn't showing
it knows enough to leave the scene
'cause light means light and dark means over
sometimes there's nothing inbetween

so much cold inside these fires / can't tell the difference between lovers and liars

a million miles away on the other side of town
another drifter picks a road
a man on a mission, he's got to tame the tiger
before his lonely heart explodes
and a walk becomes a run as he stumbles toward a beacon
shooting upwards like a flare
but just because he sees a rhyme to meet the reason
doesn't mean it's really there / it's never there

too many hearts beneath the tires / can't tell the difference between lovers and liars

is there no more illusion behind it all
gravity tells you it's time to fall
but still you keep looking for some heaven's glow
somebody told you don't let go / don't let go

so what do you do when fate conspires / to feather the difference between lovers and liars

WELCOME TO AMERICA

inside a house on somewhere street / where colors run and neighbors meet
escapes a boy in stocking feet / with headphones on his ears
one of three he stands alone / the others cut straight from the bone
of family traditions sewn / across a thousand smoky years

but since his drum is not the same / he's deemed unworthy of the game
and love is soon replaced with shame / welcome to america

i saw the prez on the tube today / a weathered lie in flesh and grey
explaining all his trash away / and pouring gas on fire
and i wondered what he'd ever do / if he were once subjected to
a fraction of what we go through / on this side of the razor wire

and meanwhile half a mile away / a child cannot come out to play
because her dad got shot today / welcome to america

the home of the brave is getting braver
the land of the free is all locked up
some people say we need a savior
i just think we need some luck

last night i bumped into your friend / asked him just how you had been
he said you'd died four months ago / so you don't get out much
and i know we weren't the best of friends / but i knew you as a gracious man
and i wondered what god's petty hand / could flick you down with just a touch

and as the dance floor spun around / and twentysomethings put us down
someone bought another round / welcome to america

HAVEN

you were so alone / you were so afraid
and i was so proud to hold you
i took your hand / and made you smile
and you did the same for me

i was your haven / in life's dark storm
when the world had left you cold / i kept you warm
i kept you warm

then it turned around / and i fell down
and you were there to catch me
with a tender kiss / and a gentle touch
you brought me home again

you were my haven / in life's dark storm
when the world had left me cold / you kept me warm

and i don't know what to do now / but i will do it for you now
and i'll see your face / in the sun / in everyone

life is sweet / time is short
but i'm so glad you made it
and if you go / you have to know
i'm with you all the way

i'll be your haven / in life's dark storm
if the world leaves you cold / i'll keep you warm
'cause you were my haven / in life's dark storm
when the world had left me cold / you kept me warm
 you kept me warm

THING YOU SAY

i'm asking questions but you're not talking
the secrets keep and the truth keeps walking
time goes by and the story's thin
when the hurt comes home it'll walk right in
look me in the eye and throw your lies my way
by the time they come around i won't believe a thing you say

now your cover's blown and your alibi's broken
your words are ghosts before they're spoken
your memory's short and your shadow's long
you hid your heart and now mine is gone
you're flying high but you're blowing me away
by the time you touch back down i won't believe a thing you say

when faith has fallen love cannot last
and my expectations are sinking fast
but one thing's sure when you come 'round
i can count on you to let me down
so don't bother telling me if you leave or if you stay
'cause by the time it hits my ears i won't believe a thing you say

HALF A MOON

i sat in the dim light with the strangers
waiting for your bold attack
you took the stage you took my heart
must not've liked it 'cause you spat it back
and as we filtered through the disbelief
with warm hands and cold hearts
we were left to wonder just what we'd seen
and how the hell it had fallen apart

you let us down you killed your sound too soon
left us blind with half a mind and half a moon

whispers swirled around the room
as the spectacle became
amateur detectives espoused their theories
as to why you left the game
someone might've missed a note or two they said
and they might have been correct
but if the only one who noticed was you
you could have carried on and continued to connect

but you took a pout and emptied out the room
left me here with half a beer and half a moon

valets scrambled for a thousand cars
in the half-glow of exit light
you were the highbeams we were just your deer
dazed and blinded and stumbling in the night
so will you please please remember missy
next time you pass that equipment truck
that my 35 dollars is still 35 dollars
whether you think you soar or suck

you ran aground you killed your sound too soon
left us here with half a beer and half a moon
you opted out and brought about a harsher tune
left us blind with half a mind and half a moon

there's 25,000 singers without a record deal

JUST LIKE YOU

you float from room to room / you light the stars and shame the moon
and beauty swarms around you
so blase and unaware / you lift love here and drop it there
as if it never found you
and the other lovers in the hall are not amused
they can't believe you treat their dreams the way you do
but it's just like you

and if the buildings get too tall / you up and walk right through the walls
like they're too thin to mention
the streets dissolve like molten wire / but you're impervious to fire
entitled to ascension
but darling you can't see the palace, the palace or the coup
and so you waste away the joys that you pass through
and it's just like you

earth to princess can you win this game
drugged and dancing down the road to fame
is this the pride that comes before your fall
are you there at all

so there you go all legs and curls / the saddest person's perfect girl
but you don't know how to be it
and when the ride comes to an end / will you break or will you bend
and will we even see it
'cause in there somewhere is the girl that someone knew
but she transposed into the star we all see through
and she's just like you

GOOD TO GO

she was sitting alone so he sidled on up and said hey you wanna have some fun
she tossed her white russian right into his eyes and snapped i don't take that crap from no one
he stumbled from the bar and out to the car  and wiped the smirn off his face
he gunned that motor and waved bye-bye  to where he never should've been in the first place

hey hey it's just an error in judgement
hey hey it's just a row you hoe
hey hey it's just a temporary weakness
one drink later and you're good to go

two hours later twenty bucks down he's sitting with a promisin' hand
and a girl from out of town in an off-white wedding gown  says 'you look like a gambling man'
well he takes his cash to leave that bash and she cries "must you fly so soon"
he says "save your act and i'll save myself 'cause honey baby here comes the groom "

hey hey it's just an error in judgement
hey hey it's just a row you hoe
hey hey it's just a temporary weakness
one drink later and you're good to go

he keeps hoping that fate will find him
he keeps looking for that brilliant light
he keeps making the wrong decisions
but so far everything's turned out all right

so he checks into the all-night confessional gonna tell the lord about his sins
sees the other hypocrites waiting their turn and he figures he'll fit right in
well he rattles off his trials and his misdemeanors and the padre he says "wow
forget the hail marys and fetch that car buddy take me with you now"

hey hey it's just an error in judgement
hey hey it's just a row you hoe
hey hey it's just a temporary weakness
one drink later and you're good to go

SEE YOUR EYES

i'm here / you're there
and i'm smilin' like a millionaire
any time i see your eyes

be it luck / be it fate
baby it's all worth the wait
any time i see your eyes

'cause your eyes
they see a deeper part of me than others see
and your heart
is the sweetest path to any dream i've ever dreamed

i may falter / i may fall
but i can weather anything at all
any time i see your eyes

and your eyes
are the brightest thing i see each day / i have to say
and their shine
it never fails it always takes / my breath away

so forgive me / if i stare
but i can get so lost in there
any time i see your eyes
any time i see your eyes

MAMA GOT MARRIED

mama got married / she got so excited
at least i suppose so / i wasn't invited
she was on the hunt now / looking for a next of kin
a place to lay her head down / a place to sink her claws in
mama got married

mama found a new love / got herself a new man
snapped her little fingers / and he jumped into the frying pan
now she has a new house / bigger than the last one
did he pull her heart strings / or did she pull a fast one
mama got married

she got down and she got down to it
found herself a fire and dove right through it
mama's just grinning from ear to ear
gonna make a bundle on her tax this year

mama got married / caught him on his last leg
so he gets henpeck / and she gets a nest egg
she's on cloud nine now / she's rolling in clover
meanwhile in the graveyard / daddy rolls over
mama got married

BLIND

i have no excuse for my behavior
didn't give the love that you deserve
i only pray forgiveness will be my savior
and baby i'm meaning every word

i was blind / i was blind
but now i see

i guess i wasn't thinking 'bout tomorrow
always living in the here and now
i should have known my weakness / would bring you sorrow
and i will make it up to you somehow

i was blind / i was blind

but now i see / the pain inside
this gentle heart  / that i made cry
and i see / that i was wrong
i don't know why / it took so long
it took so long

so now i'm standing here before you
with humble heart and ragged stance
i can't believe / that i ignored you
but baby all i need is one more chance

i was blind / i was blind blind blind
i was blind
but now i see
i see

IMPERFECT HEART

got the call / 5:03
talkin' 'bout people talkin' 'bout me
i don't care / know they're wrong
they play the jury and i play along

they believe / there's no chance
your plans plus my plans can equal romance
they're so sure / that they know
but i have this dream and i'm not letting go

and i'm trying / to connect
but i'm coming up blue and i ain't reached you yet
need to know / where to start
searching for your perfect love / with my imperfect heart

here we go / round 23
i try to grasp it / and it eludes me
it's so hard / to live this life
wishing all day and crying all night

but i hope / and i pray
you'll see what i see and we'll find a way
my eyes / are on your face
but the sweeter the purse babe the harder the race

and i'm  trying / to connect
but i'm coming up blue and i ain't reached you yet
need to know / where to start
searching for your perfect love / with my imperfect heart

where'd you go babe
and where am i
catch this spark
don't let it die

and i'm trying / to connect
but i'm coming up blue and i ain't reached you yet
need to know / where to start
searching for your perfect love with my imperfect heart

trying to connect
but i'm coming up blue and i ain't reached you yet
need to know / where to star
/ searching for your perfect love / with my imperfect heart
my imperfect heart

HINDSIGHT (CLEAR)

two miles south of tangerine
beneath the brightest stars i've seen
i wonder if your view's the same
and if you ever think of me

and i think of what i pushed aside
as i started on my lonely ride
and all the things i threw away
that i should've known i'd need someday

it's all so clear
now that you're not here
 it's all so clear
now that you're not here

i'm standing on a street i know
near the roses that we used to grow
they're dying in the garden now
doesn't seem the same somehow

and if i have one wish for you
i'm wishing that you never knew
the pain i brought into  your eyes
with my steely heart and velvet lies

it's oh so clear
now that you're not here
it's oh so clear
now that you're not here
